Oman Signs Major Strategic Aviation Agreements Covering Airport Operations and Maintenance

Oman Signs Strategic Aviation Agreements to Drive Sector Growth

The Sultanate of Oman has signed landmark aviation agreements covering the operation, management, and development of Muscat International Airport, Salalah Airport, and Sohar Airport, along with expanded aircraft maintenance and training frameworks. Executed during the Civil Aviation Investment Forum organized by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), these agreements aim to boost direct investment and optimize infrastructure performance across the national aviation landscape. By modernizing facilities and strengthening operational standards, the initiative directly supports Oman's long-term economic strategy and elevates its standing within the global transport network.

Extended Airport Operations Concession and Service Standardization

A primary component of the package includes a 35-year concession agreement signed between the Civil Aviation Authority and Oman Airports. This deal grants Oman Airports exclusive rights to manage, operate, and develop Muscat International Airport, Salalah Airport, and Sohar Airport in accordance with leading international facility and ground handling benchmarks. The long-term contractual framework ensures high safety protocols while transforming these transit hubs into integrated commercial and logistics centers capable of delivering elevated passenger experiences through modern technologies.

Establishing Heavy Maintenance Hubs and MRO Operations

To broaden domestic technical capabilities, the Civil Aviation Authority finalized a 20-year agreement with Indonesia’s GMF AeroAsia for Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations at Muscat International Airport. Operating in partnership with regional stakeholders, the facility will deliver airframe, engine, component, and avionics maintenance for national and international commercial airlines. Positioned strategically in Muscat, this MRO hub facilitates technology transfer and transforms regional maintenance infrastructure while building localized technical expertise.

Empowering National Cadres and Expanding Aviation Training

The signed agreements emphasize workforce development and localized skill transfer to build a sustainable national aviation ecosystem. Specialized training partnerships, including cooperation between the Oman Aviation Academy and the Arab Aviation Academy, aim to deliver advanced instruction to young Omani aerospace professionals. Increasing Omanization across technical and administrative roles equips the local workforce with specialized skills required to support high-tech aerospace operations, ensuring domestic self-reliance in specialized maintenance and airport management sectors.

Aligning National Infrastructure with Oman Vision 2040

Ultimately, the comprehensive aviation agreements mark a significant step forward under the National Aviation Strategy 2040. Modernizing airport facilities, scaling specialized maintenance capabilities, and investing in human capital reinforces Oman's position as a regional hub for trade, logistics, and tourism. These multi-sector partnerships attract targeted foreign capital, foster commercial growth, and build a resilient economic foundation driven by high-value transportation networks.
