Muscat Municipality Introduces Clean E-Mobility Solution for Urban Transport
Muscat Municipality, in strategic partnership with Thimar Company, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTC), and Nama, is preparing to launch a landmark e-bike sharing service across the capital. Supported by a comprehensive network of automated battery swapping stations, the clean transport initiative aims to provide an affordable, eco-friendly, and convenient travel alternative for municipality workers as Oman approaches the cooler winter months. The initiative reflects growing efforts by civic authorities to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce carbon emissions in high-density metropolitan areas.
Phased Rollout of 56 Battery Swapping Stations Across Muscat
The green mobility framework combines advanced hardware technology with robust municipal utility integration:
- Initial Operational Phase: Phase one will deploy 14 battery swapping stations across high-density commercial and residential hubs, including Al Qurum, Al Ghubra, and Al Khoudh.
- Full Network Scale: The complete project rollout will ultimately feature 56 battery swapping stations distributed across Muscat Governorate.
- International Technology Transfer: E-bikes and modular swapping infrastructure are supplied by Thimar Company through a strategic partnership with a leading Chinese manufacturing enterprise.
- Utility Infrastructure Integration: Nama is actively upgrading multi-phase electrical grid connections across all station sites to ensure reliable, high-capacity power distribution.
High-Performance E-Bike Specifications and LFP Battery Safety Standards
Designed for long-range urban operations, each e-bike utilizes high-capacity, non-flammable battery technology engineered for extreme climate stability. Powered by two swappable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries rated at 2.8 kWh each, the combined 5.6 kWh power unit delivers an operational range of 140 to 160 km per swap. While the e-bikes boast a top speed of 120 km/h, operational speed will be strictly governed in accordance with ministry regulations prohibiting access on roads with speed limits exceeding 100 km/h. Crucially, LFP chemistry ensures the batteries remain explosion-proof and thermally safe.
Real-Time IoT Tracking and Omantel Connectivity Platform
Every battery unit features integrated Internet of Things (IoT) hardware and an Omantel SIM card, enabling Thimar and MoTC to monitor voltage, temperature, and location in real time via a unified swapping platform. As testing continues across the initial 14 sites, the system allows users to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged units within seconds, eliminating long charging delays. Officials confirm that real-time usage data collected through the IoT platform will dictate future network expansion phases across the governorate.
Advancing Sustainable Smart City Goals Under Oman Vision 2040
Ultimately, the launch of Muscat’s e-bike sharing and battery swapping network directly aligns with the sustainable transport and smart city objectives of Oman Vision 2040. Integrating zero-emission micromobility options into daily municipal operations significantly reduces urban carbon footprints while modernizing civic transport infrastructure. As Muscat Municipality, MoTC, and Nama finalize operational testing, the project establishes a scalable blueprint for future clean energy transit solutions across the Sultanate.
