The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has reached a major international milestone after being selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) to represent the Eastern Mediterranean Region on the Global Technical Committee for Road Safety Legislation. This prestigious appointment makes the ROP the only security and military entity participating in the international forum. The selection serves as global recognition for Oman's highly successful implementation of evidence-based traffic legislation and smart technologies.
This milestone follows closely on the heels of the ROP securing first place at the International Road Federation (IRF) Global Awards in Athens, Greece. The international award specifically recognized the ROP’s outstanding achievements in using artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics to modernize traffic management. By combining strict legislative enforcement with high-tech tracking, the Sultanate has established itself as a regional leader in modern digital governance and public safety.
Central to this global recognition is the ROP's smart traffic project, developed in close collaboration with global tech firms including Huawei Oman and Maxvision Technology. The initiative features AI-powered monitoring systems and advanced smart cameras deployed across the country's major road networks. These intelligent systems are specifically calibrated to automatically detect high-risk violations, including mobile phone usage while driving, failure to wear seatbelts, and erratic lane changes, without requiring manual police intervention.
Beyond simple ticket issuance, the integrated AI platform uses advanced analytics to process real-time accident data and systematically identify high-risk "black spots" on the roads. By scientifically analyzing terrain, speed patterns, and historical collision data, the ROP can deploy preventative measures and optimize emergency response times. This data-driven strategy has contributed to a measurable and sustained decline in road accidents and traffic fatalities across the Sultanate.
Officials emphasize that this international acclaim highlights the efficiency of Oman's national road safety policies, which directly align with the infrastructure goals of Oman Vision 2040. By transforming traditional policing into a predictive, tech-driven operation, the ROP is setting a benchmark for the region. The appointment to the WHO committee ensures that Oman’s successful blend of AI technology and traffic legislation will help shape future road safety frameworks on a global scale.
