Ministry Of Health Launches International Patient Summary (IPS) Service For Hajj Pilgrims Via Shifa App

The Ministry of Health (MOH), acting through the Directorate General of Information Technology and Digital Health, has officially launched the International Patient Summary (IPS) service specifically for Hajj pilgrims. Integrated directly into the existing "Shifa" mobile application, this digital health initiative is designed to provide critical medical data access for citizens and residents traveling to holy sites, ensuring a safer and more interconnected healthcare experience during the pilgrimage.

The IPS service functions as a secure, standardized electronic health record wrapper that compiles an individual's essential medical history. By utilizing the Shifa app, pilgrims can easily carry and display their vital health data—including chronic conditions, recent prescriptions, allergies, blood types, and vaccination histories—in a universally recognizable digital format. This eliminates the need to transport bulky paper medical records across international borders.

A primary benefit of the IPS integration is its global interoperability, allowing foreign medical staff in Saudi Arabia to instantly understand a pilgrim's health background during an emergency. Because the data follows international digital health standards, medical professionals at Hajj clinics can make rapid, well-informed clinical decisions. This capability is crucial for preventing adverse drug interactions and administering accurate treatment under time-sensitive conditions.

The Directorate General of Information Technology and Digital Health emphasized that data security and patient privacy remain foundational to the service. The medical summaries are encrypted and can only be accessed or shared through the user’s direct authorization within the Shifa platform. This balance of data mobility and strict privacy controls aligns with modern digital health governance frameworks.

This launch represents a significant milestone in Oman’s digital health roadmap and its commitment to supporting its citizens abroad. By leveraging the Shifa application to bridge local healthcare data with international emergency systems, the MOH is prioritizing preventative care and operational efficiency. The service ensures that Omani pilgrims can embark on their spiritual journey with the reassurance of continuous, data-driven medical backup.
