Hafeet Rail Set to Transform Cross-Border Connectivity Between UAE and Oman

Hafeet Rail Unveils High-Speed Cross-Border Travel Framework

Hafeet Rail, a joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company, is advancing the construction of a landmark 303-kilometer railway network linking the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman. Designed as the first international cross-border segment of the broader Gulf Railway vision, the $3 billion infrastructure project will connect Abu Dhabi to the Omani coastal port city of Sohar via Al Ain. Upon full operational deployment, passenger trains traveling at speeds up to 200 km/h will dramatically reduce travel times, unlocking seamless overland mobility between both nations.

Significant Travel Time Reductions and Technical Specifications

The high-speed passenger service is engineered to cut travel duration between Sohar and Abu Dhabi to just 1 hour and 40 minutes, while shortening journeys from Sohar to Al Ain to approximately 47 minutes. Operating with a capacity of up to 400 passengers per train, the passenger fleet features state-of-the-art European Signaling Systems (ETCS Level 2) and integrated fiber-optic communication networks. Constructing the complex corridor involves building 36 viaducts, 2,500 meters of specialized mountain tunnels, and advanced cross-border customs infrastructure to facilitate rapid passport and security clearance.

Dual-Purpose Infrastructure Boosting Freight and Trade Capacity

In addition to passenger transit, Hafeet Rail incorporates heavy freight operations running at speeds of up to 120 km/h. A single freight train trip across the network can transport over 15,000 tonnes of cargo or up to 270 standard shipping containers, directly linking five major commercial sea ports and over 15 logistics facilities across both countries. This integrated freight capability serves strategic industrial sectors including mining, steel production, petrochemicals, e-commerce, and agriculture, providing regional exporters with a faster, lower-carbon alternative to traditional road and sea haulage.

Strategic Economic Alignment with Oman Vision 2040 and UAE Goals

Developing this unified transit corridor directly supports national economic development goals under Oman Vision 2040 and the UAE’s long-term economic strategy. By connecting major economic zones, industrial hubs, and urban centers, Hafeet Rail encourages cross-border investment, stimulates bilateral tourism, and optimizes regional supply chain efficiency. Furthermore, replacing heavy highway transport with electrified rail infrastructure significantly reduces carbon emissions across regional trade corridors, advancing sustainability and climate resilience objectives.

Redefining Regional Mobility and Cross-Border Collaboration

Ultimately, the implementation of Hafeet Rail marks an unprecedented milestone in GCC infrastructure integration, setting a new standard for regional cross-border travel. Connecting commercial gateways and urban populations across the UAE and Oman establishes a resilient foundation for long-term economic prosperity and cultural exchange. As construction milestones progress, the network continues to pave the way toward a fully integrated Gulf transport system that redefines modern mobility across the region.
