Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has officially initiated a nationwide public consultation on draft regulations that could legally prohibit children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. The regulatory push aims to gather critical feedback from government entities, technology companies, legal experts, and parents to evaluate the feasibility of enforcing a hard age limit across the Sultanate. If finalized into law, the mandate will establish 16 as the absolute baseline age required to open or operate personal profiles on major interactive networks such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and X.
The TRA's draft framework addresses deep-seated concerns regarding the unchecked impact of digital media on adolescents, focusing heavily on mitigating risks like algorithmic addiction, cyberbullying, data exploitation, and severe mental health challenges. The proposed rules would introduce strict legal and technical requirements for technology giants operating within the country. Key provisions under review include the mandatory deployment of robust, AI-supported age-verification systems, enhanced content filters to block inappropriate material, and explicit penalties for digital platforms that fail to comply with youth data protection baselines.
Beyond corporate obligations, the consultation document closely explores the shared responsibilities of parents and legal guardians in monitoring and managing their children's screen time. Rather than relying solely on sweeping platform bans, the regulator is evaluating a multi-layered ecosystem that balances government oversight with active domestic supervision. By inviting public recommendations, the TRA emphasizes its commitment to drafting legislation that is highly enforceable, culturally aligned with Omani society, and fully consistent with elite international child safety benchmarks.
This regulatory movement positions Oman at the forefront of an aggressive, global wave of state interventions aiming to disconnect minors from addictive scrolling feeds. The move closely follows a neighboring resolution implemented in the United Arab Emirates, which established a strict social media ban for children under 15 while introducing high-security parental controls for older teenagers. As the TRA compiles feedback to shape its final statutory code, the initiative marks a significant step under Oman Vision 2040 to foster a safe, resilient, and ethically balanced digital environment for the nation's future generation.
