Oman Sovereign Wealth Fund Invests in Elon Musk’s Neuralink

The Oman Investment Authority (OIA) has officially announced a strategic investment in Neuralink, the neurotechnology firm founded by Elon Musk. This move, finalized in early May 2026, marks a significant push by the Sultanate into "deep tech" and high-growth healthcare sectors, aligning with the broader economic diversification goals of Oman Vision 2040.

Neuralink is at the forefront of developing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. Its primary product, a neural implant, is designed to enable direct communication between the human brain and digital devices.

This technology holds transformative potential for patients suffering from:

  • Paralysis and Spinal Cord Injuries: Allowing users to control computers, smartphones, or robotic limbs through thought alone.
  • Neurological Diseases: Targeting conditions like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and strokes by bypassing damaged neural pathways to restore speech and motor functions.

Key Milestones as of 2026

  • Clinical Expansion: By early 2026, Neuralink had successfully implanted devices in 21 human patients globally. This includes a significant expansion of trials in the United States and the United Kingdom, with plans to move specialized surgical robots to the UAE and other regions to reach a target of 1,000 implants by the end of the year.
  • The "Blindsight" Project: The company is advancing its "Blindsight" initiative, which aims to restore vision to the blind—including those blind from birth—by stimulating the visual cortex. The device was granted Breakthrough Device Designation by the FDA in late 2024, and the first human trials are anticipated to begin in 2026.
  • Advanced Robotics: Neuralink is currently developing a next-generation surgical robot capable of reaching any region of the brain, a critical step toward making brain-computer interfaces a standard medical procedure.

This investment underscores Oman's strategy to secure a stake in the "New Economy," joining other global sovereign wealth funds in backing frontier technologies that bridge the gap between biology and artificial intelligence.
