A high-level delegation from the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) has embarked on a strategic visit to the People’s Republic of China. This mission is designed to build bridges with leading Chinese industrial hubs and explore the latest advancements in "New Economy" sectors. By engaging directly with global tech leaders, the delegation aims to position Oman’s special zones—including Duqm and Salalah—as the preferred destination for Chinese firms looking to expand into the Middle East and African markets.
The primary focus of the visit centers on the rapidly evolving fields of pharmaceuticals and advanced medical devices. OPAZ is looking to attract Chinese manufacturers specializing in precision medical equipment and biotechnology, hoping to localize these high-tech industries within the Sultanate. Such partnerships are seen as vital for Oman’s national health security, as they would transition the country from being a net importer of medical technology to a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation.
In addition to healthcare technology, the delegation is prioritizing the enhancement of Oman’s logistics and energy infrastructure. The visit includes deep-dive sessions with Chinese logistics giants to discuss the integration of smart-port technologies and automated supply chain solutions. These discussions are aimed at leveraging China’s world-class expertise to optimize OPAZ-managed zones, ensuring they can handle increased trade volumes with higher efficiency and lower operational costs.
Energy security also features prominently on the agenda, specifically regarding the storage and management of petroleum derivatives. The Omani delegation is exploring specialized partnerships for the construction and operation of advanced storage facilities. By collaborating with Chinese firms experienced in large-scale energy logistics, OPAZ seeks to expand Oman’s capacity as a global energy hub, capitalizing on its strategic geographical location outside the Strait of Hormuz.
Ultimately, this visit underscores the deepening economic synergy between Oman and China under the "Belt and Road" framework and Oman Vision 2040. By securing commitments in high-value sectors like medical technology and energy logistics, OPAZ is working to diversify the national economy and create high-skill employment opportunities for Omani citizens. These international partnerships are expected to result in several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that will set the stage for a new wave of Chinese investment in the Sultanate’s free zones.
