To Commemorate Arab Human Rights Day On March 16, A Specialized Seminar Was Convened In Muscat, Oman

Oman observed Arab Human Rights Day on March 16 by hosting a specialized seminar at the Diplomatic Club in Muscat titled Protecting Human Rights in the Digital Space and Artificial Intelligence. The event brought together a diverse group of officials, technical experts, and representatives from the public, private, and civil sectors to discuss the intersection of technology and personal freedoms.

Dr. Yahya Nasser Al Khusaibi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, presided over the gathering. During the session, Saleh Yahya Al Maskari from the Foreign Ministry emphasized that digital platforms and AI have become fundamental to modern life. He noted that these technologies serve as vital tools for expression and employment, making it essential to recognize that human rights protections must extend beyond the physical world into the digital realm. Al Maskari highlighted the need for robust legal frameworks to combat challenges like data misuse and system hacking.

The Foreign Ministry continues to play a pivotal role in aligning Oman with international digital ethics and human rights standards. By collaborating with global organizations and monitoring technological shifts, the ministry ensures that national policies remain effective and respect shared human values. This proactive approach helps decision-makers navigate the complexities of the digital age while maintaining a commitment to international cooperation.

Dr. Rashid Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, further noted that while AI and modern technology offer immense potential for societal well-being, they must never come at the cost of human dignity or privacy. He shared that the Commission is actively integrating AI to streamline its services, improve the processing of human rights complaints, and better monitor national indicators.

The seminar also served as a platform to announce a new digital transformation project by the Oman Human Rights Commission. This initiative focuses on using AI to enhance the experience for beneficiaries by creating smarter communication channels for reporting and consultations. By utilizing data analysis and automated tools, the Commission aims to increase the overall efficiency and reach of its human rights advocacy throughout the Sultanate.
