Oracle and OpenAI have officially halted plans to expand their premier "Stargate" artificial intelligence data center in Abilene, Texas. According to recent reports, the decision to abandon the expansion follows a breakdown in financing negotiations and a shift in OpenAI’s evolving technical requirements.
Despite this change, the core "Stargate" initiative a massive $500 billion, 10-gigawatt project backed by SoftBank and originally announced by the U.S. government in early 2025 remains active. While the specific 600-megawatt expansion in Abilene is off the table, the companies intend to fulfill that capacity at other developing data center campuses. Currently, the Abilene site consists of eight buildings managed by Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, two of which are already operational.
The pause in negotiations has created a strategic opening for Meta Platforms. The social media giant is reportedly considering leasing the available Texas expansion space from the developer, Crusoe. This potential transition was reportedly facilitated by Nvidia, which allegedly stepped in to ensure its advanced AI chips remain the primary hardware for the site over competitors like AMD.
While Oracle and OpenAI's broader 4.5-gigawatt development plan remains on track, this shift highlights the intense competition and massive capital investment currently defining the global race for AI infrastructure.
