Oman Proposes National AI Supercomputer to Boost Tech Independence

According to a report by the Oman Observer, a new study from UNESCO on Oman’s AI readiness suggests that the Sultanate is planning a major technological leap by establishing a National AI Supercomputer Centre. This facility is intended to be the heart of the country’s long-term plan to move away from an oil-reliant economy. By using artificial intelligence to drive economic diversity and create high-tech jobs, Oman aims to fulfill the ambitious goals set out in its Vision 2040.

A major part of this proposal is the creation of a high-performance computing laboratory. This center would allow Omani researchers to train advanced AI models and run complex simulations for critical sectors like energy and climate change. Currently, many local startups and researchers have to rely on expensive foreign cloud services, which the report describes as a strategic risk. By building its own supercomputer, Oman can keep its sensitive national data within its own borders and significantly lower the costs for local innovators.

The report also highlights Oman’s unique geographical advantage. Because the country sits at a crossroads where many global undersea internet cables meet, it is perfectly positioned to become a regional hub for data. Instead of just letting data pass through its territory, Oman could process and host AI workloads for other countries in the GCC, East Africa, and Central Asia. This would essentially turn Oman into an exporter of high-speed digital services.

To pull this off, the study recommends creating Digital Special Economic Zones. These zones would offer tax breaks and better regulations to attract international tech companies to set up shop in Oman. Additionally, upgrading the local fiber networks would ensure that Omani data centers have the speed and reliability to compete on a global stage. This collaborative effort between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and UNESCO marks a serious commitment to making Oman a sovereign and sustainable leader in the world of AI.
